MALÉ, MALDIVES – Candela, the world leader in electric hydrofoil technology, announced its role as a main partner for the upcoming AHICE Maldives conference.

In conjunction with this partnership, Candela has published a new white paper. It details a strategic path for the Maldives to protect invaluable marine ecosystems. The plan also aims to enhance the nation’s luxury tourism sector.

Protecting Maldives’ reefs with Candela P-12

The white paper is titled “A modern solution for protecting sensitive marine ecosystems with the Candela P-12.”  It was developed with the Centre for Maritime Studies at The Maldives National University. In addition, the paper presents the Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil ferry as a comprehensive solution to the environmental and operational challenges facing the island nation.

At the same time, the document identifies a critical conflict where the diesel-powered boats essential for tourism are actively harming the fragile ecosystems that are the nation’s greatest asset.

Reflecting this, Pieter Demaeght, Head of APAC Sales at Candela Technology AB, said “The Maldives has a unique opportunity to lead the world in sustainable luxury tourism. Our white paper presents a clear, data-driven case for Candela P-12. It enables a harmonious relationship between transport and nature.”

Business case aligned with Net Zero 2030

Beyond the environmental benefits, the white paper also establishes a powerful business case for resort operators.

The adoption of the P-12 aligns directly with the Maldives’ national climate action goals. Specifically, the initiative—developed in partnership with AHICE Maldives— supports the nation’s target of achieving Net Zero by 2030. Furthermore, it contributes to mitigation actions in the Maldives’ Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

Leveraging the P-12’s high efficiency—using up to 80% less energy than other electric boats—empowers resorts. As a result, they can build self-sufficient energy ecosystems with solar power and battery storage. Ultimately, this reduces reliance on imported fossil fuels, as called for in the Road Map for the Energy Sector 2020–2030.

The paper ends with a call to action for leaders of the Maldivian resort industry. Accordingly, it urges them to invest in this transformative technology not just as an operational upgrade, but as a direct investment in the long-term ecological and economic legacy of the Maldives.
